Let’s face it: training a puppy can be hard work! Not all of us are born dog whisperers, after all. But if you’ve never tried clicker dog training before, you’re in for a big surprise. Puppy training can be fun–and easy too!

Put simply, clicker dog training is one of the simplest and most effective ways to train a puppy.

Clicker training is used by professional trainers across the world for all different types of animals–but it’s perfectly easy for you to learn to do it at home.

With only a little practice, you can teach your puppy all the basic cues such as come when called, sit, down and stay with just a click. This method is used to train dolphins, horses, bears and dogs–and it seems it even works on humans too!

So what’s the big secret behind clicker dog training?

It works on the principle of letting your dog know when he has done something right and then rewarding him for this behavior. This principle is called positive reinforcement and it’s one of the most powerful ways a dog can learn.

A clicker is a small, inexpensive, handheld device with a button that makes a ‘click’ sound when pressed. It’s a short, sharp sound that dogs can easily recognize.

Here’s how it works:

You ask the dog for a certain action – for example, to sit.

The dog sits.

You immediately click and give the dog a reward and praise.

The dog now knows that when he hears the click, he must have done something right. And if he does something right, he gets a reward–so he will make sure he does the right thing again next time he is asked.

Timing is all important. You must click as soon as the dog does the right thing, not a couple of seconds after, when he’s scratching his ear or looking at a butterfly. Otherwise he’ll think he’s being rewarded for scratching or not paying attention! This is one of the most important things to know when learning how to train a dog.

Clicker dog training can produce great results very quickly, even on dogs that have been difficult to train. No yelling, shouting or hitting required! Just simple, gentle, effective dog training methods that work.

You can use it to train a dog to do tricks as well. Have you seen some of those very clever dogs on TV or at a fair who do all kinds of amazing tricks for their handlers? Many of them will have been trained with a clicker and it’s really not hard to pick up this technique yourself. In no time, you can have your dog shaking hands, spinning in circles, speaking on command, rolling over–the list goes on!

Believe me, once you start to apply clicker dog training, you’ll be astounded at the speedy results you get from your unruly pup.

Having a pet can be a tedious task. Especially if it is not trained. However, training pets like dogs can be extremely difficult. The solution to this is to use clicker dog training to train your dog.

Clicker dog training uses a clicker to indicate to the animal that their behavior is correct. The click sound produced makes the animal aware that they have done the right thing. Clicker dog training is extremely reliable and can be done by anyone. Training your dog using a clicker enables the animal to be aware of the consequences of their behavior. This in turn enables the animal to remember what he has learned as it is not learned out of habit. A clicker is used instead of giving the animal a reward in order to make sure that the behavior does not become habitual. A clicker is instant and makes the dog aware that what they just did is desirable. If we try to do this with spoken words this will take too long. The instant nature of the clicker is the key to its success.

Clicker dog training works in a very simple manner. The trainer clicks the moment the desired behavior is performed by the dog. An example of this would be when the dog rolls over. The click reinforces the behavior indicating to the animal that the desired outcome was achieved. Once this is done the trainer can give the dog a treat. After repeating such the training routines a few times the animal will associate the click with positive behavior which usually results in a treat. In order to successfully train your dog you must constantly use this training. Part of training the dog is repeating the process until the dog learns to associate the click with positive behavior.

Clicker dog training only works if the animal has learned and understood commands properly. Therefore, it is essential to be certain that your dog has understood the different actions for different commands. If your dog is not obeying commands it is not a sign that the animal is disobedient. It is because the dog has not understood the command. Hence, it has to be learned again. Dogs learn commands only through repetition. Therefore, in order to properly train your dog you must constantly reinforce commands that you have thought the animal. Only then will you be able to use clicker dog training to train your dog properly.

Using a clicker to train your dog is relatively new in the dog obedience world. The clicker itself is a simple piece of equipment, nothing more than a small rectangular box with a metal button that clicks when pressed. Many trainers that integrate this training method in with more conventional obedience training have found that it can cut training time in half for some dogs.

The idea behind clicker training is that it is a type of enforced training without the punishment aspect. Dogs learn through repetition and when they do the right thing and are rewarded for it they will continue with that behavior. Dogs also like to please their humans and if they do something that earns praise and a treat they will learn this behavior because it makes us happy. The converse is also true. If they do not behave or do as commanded they then get ignored or told no in a strict voice. A dog soon comes to realize that when this occurs no praise or treat will be given and they do not like that.

Clicker dog training works on the principle that good behavior will be rewarded. For instance if you are training your dog to sit you give the command. When he sits you click your clicker and give him a treat. You repeat this process with each behavior you are teaching him to do. He will soon connect the clicking sound with a reward, whether it’s a treat or praise. The clicking sound acts as an event marker that instantly communicates approval of what he is doing. During the first sessions of clicker training it is best to stay close to the dog so that the click and reward or treat can be given almost simultaneously. This allows your dog to associate the two happenings quickly.

As your dog becomes more used to this type of training you can begin to delay the reward portion of the training. This will allow you to start training your dog at a distance, giving you the ability to control your dog when he is off the leash. Again, you will still click at the moment a command is successfully done, but the click is now a signal that there will be a reward in the near future.

The clicker should never be used as a punishment or with punishment as it will send the wrong message to your dog. While punishing your dog for bad behavior may work sometimes it can create other unwanted behaviors. Because dogs have little or no sense of time and they are usually punished after they have done something wrong they seldom understand why they are being punished. If you use the clicker at this time they will associate its use with being punished.

The interesting thing about clicker dog training is that the use of a clicker to train is used on other animals such as horses, birds, and dolphins. If you want to speed up the process of training your dog consider the use of a clicker. It is becoming more popular and it does produce great training results.

Positive reinforcement, rewards, and patient observation of the response patterns constitute an important part of the clicker dog training process.

Clicker dog training is based on the rudiments of Edward Thorndike’s theory of ‘connection-ism,’ which was the result of a study into animal behavior and learning. In the process, the dog is first made to understand the meaning of the click by providing immediate rewards so as to give them the idea that obeying the clicker means getting rewards that they find it enjoyable. Moreover, once the dog adapts to the sound of the clicker, they learn to be responsive and obedient to other basic commands.

A simple training process, clicker dog training initially needs to be repeated over a number of times. Positive reinforcement of clicker training has proven to be an effective training method not only for dogs but also for species such as pigeons, whales, bears, and lions etc. As you begin with your clicker training, it calls for exercising a lot of restrain and patience so as not to make the whole process seem like forced or confrontational.

Your dog should not be made to do anything by force but to guide them until the desired behavioral outcomes that you as a dog trainer desire. Once you have understood the basics of the clicker training, it will not only prove to be an effective instrument for training dogs, but may also lend you insights into human psychology that we as humans need to know.

As the dogs are presented with the opportunity to have control over the consequences of their actions, they become excited because they know that doing something for you will be followed by rewards that are pleasurable for them. Once your dog is clicker trained, they develop confidence and other instinctive skills required for learning new behaviors.

Clicker dog training may initially be frustrating and you may end up whacking your dogs as result. However, be advised not to resort to punishment or unpleasant actions for unwanted response and behaviors. Although punishments are known to decrease unwanted behaviors in dogs, it is found to be counterproductive, as it produces other unwanted behaviors. Besides, dogs find it difficult to associate clicker with the consequence of punishment, as punishment for animals are random and meaningless.

As opposed to inappropriate negative stimulation, many people involved in clicker dog training also find, that focusing on positive reinforcement yields better and rewarding human-to-animals relationships which, of course is necessary for making the dog obedient.

For your clicker dog training to be effective, use treats that your dog really loves, and as you progress you may follow up teaching them basic commands for less delectable ones. Try to make the training session as interesting and short as possible. More can be learned in short sessions than through long and tedious sessions. Respond to unwanted behavior by clicking for good behavior. Avoid shouting at them for barking at visitors but tell them to be quiet by clicking for silence. Trick your dog into a movement or position for spontaneous outcome, but don’t drag them into doing something to ‘teach.’

Clicker dog training is a simplest, easiest and scientific method of training pets and has become popular in recent years. It is generally used for training dogs in police, army department and other dog patrol firms. This system allows owner/trainer to communicate with dog in simple instructions using clickers.

The clicker is a small plastic box; consist of a metal strip that makes a different clicking sound when pressed. During training, clicker sound is used as a marker when the dog is successful in completing the desired behavior or command. A treat is given as a reward after the click helps dogs to understand and follow the instructions. Once the dog learns the positive sound effects of the clicking, the clicker itself acts as a habituated informer. More over, clicker acts as reinforcement to verbal commands especially one word commands like “sit’ or “stay” in which dog responds quickly to the click sound. Also the clicker is much quicker as well as different than saying “good dog”.

To implement clipper training method, the trainer should follow certain steps. I have listed out some of the basic steps:

Select one quiet area to begin the training,

Prior to working with dog, trainer has to practice the timing of the clicks. It is very important to use the clicker on the right moment which helps dogs to understand the command better, delay in clicking sound will confuse your dog regarding the action to be done.

Make sure that you have enough treats which your dog likes a lot. Preferably, this should be done when your dog is hungry.

Give your dog the treat right immediately after the clicker. The same procedure to be repeated for 5-10 times.

Not to over do the clicks and be consistent in number of clicks. It is as important as timing.

The session is effective when it is short and to the point. Ideal duration of training session will be around five minutes.

To find out whether you and your dog are ready to move on to the next stage you can simply press the clicker and observe him to see whether he comes over expecting a treat from you

Each time when your dog follows instructions do not forget to appreciate him by giving a treat. This is most important aspect in training as this is what motivates them to obey instructions.

Do not scold or yell when using the clicker. Dogs can sense the mood and use of clickers will confuse them.

As dogs are simple-hearted creatures who like to enjoy fun, it is better to involve all the members of the family, including children in training session. It helps to encourage your dog’s friendlier nature and love towards human being.

There are many misconceptions regarding clicker training to dogs.

Some of them are:

Dogs may become fat as they get more treat,

Dogs will not do anything without clicker sound,

Clicker may not be successful in noisy area, etc.

However, clicker dog training is scientifically one of the best ways to train dogs. It helps the owner to understand behavioral problems such as dog biting or aggressiveness and also reduces the training time by 1/3.

Clicker dog training is an amazing technique. It is easy to learn, and is a powerful training tool. This training method is useful for dog behavior training to shape new behaviors and discourage misbehaviors. Clicker dog training is based on both classical and operant conditioning.

Clicker dog training is a highly precise technique and a tremendously effective mode of communicating with the dogs irrespective of the age, gender and breed. It is a method of dog training that almost entirely uses the concept of positive reinforcement to teach your dog to enjoy learning.

The idea behind clicker dog training is taking that natural behavior in dogs and giving positive outcomes to actions that you as the trainer want your dog to repeat. The only simple things you must have to start clicker dog training is first a dog clicker, treats, and leash.

The first step in the clicker training method is known as loading the clicker. This step takes place before any dog obedience training begins, and it serves the purpose of associating the sound of the clicker with something good. By then, the dog will have come to understand the sound of the clicker means he has done something good, and you can begin training your dog with the clicker. Positive reinforcement and clicker training are both methods that do not involve corrections in the training.

Training

Training sessions must be short, so they will be fun for you and your dog and they will be easier to evaluate. During the first sessions of clicker training it is best to stay close to the dog so that the click and reward or treat can be given almost simultaneously. As your dog becomes more used to this type of training you can begin to delay the reward portion of the training. This will allow you to start training your dog at a distance, giving you the ability to control your dog when he is off the leash. Consider the use of a clicker if you want to speed up the process of training your dog. It is becoming more popular and it does produce great training results.

Clicker

Clicker training uses behavioral science methods to communicate effectively with the dogs. It is also free from any violence or harsh corrections. Clicker trained dogs quickly learn that the clicking sound is a good thing, that a reward is on its way and they strive to hear its sweet sound.

Behavior

Quite simply clicker dog training is the most humane and effective way we know how to shape any new behavior in our dogs and extinguish any existing behavior problems. Humane dog training is about teaching dogs new and alternative behaviors in a way that is neither threatening to the animal or does not undermine the relationship between dogs and their owners. Dogs learn through repetition and when they do the right thing and are rewarded for it they will continue with that behavior. Dogs also like to please their humans and if they do something that earns praise and a treat they will learn this behavior because it makes us happy.

The basic behavioral exercises may include commands such as sit, stay, down, heel, wait or any other commands that will simplify your life, and help to ensure the safety of your pet. However, if you are dealing with any type of aggression issues with your pet then you might require more advanced dog behavior training. Most methods work as long as they are used consistently and adequate reinforcement is provided to help the dog to understand the desired behavior.

Remember the key to success of clicker dog training is patience. Discover why Clicker Dog Training is a brilliant way to properly train and bond with your puppy or older dog. You’ll find a huge collection of proven dog training information and tips used by professional dog trainers worldwide. With the right techniques clicker dog training is fun for the dog and owner and will make living with your dog a much more joyful experience.

The Fun of Flyball

Flyball, if you’ve never seen it, is a relay race for dogs. Two teams race on parallel tracks through an electronic gate, over four hurdles to a Flyball Box , from whence they must retrieve a ball and return lickety split… without missing a jump and without dropping the ball. On paper I suspect it sounds rather pedestrian. But did I mention the timer? The whole round trip might take… say, four or five seconds per dog.

Last weekend I spent two rollicking days at the Fresno Fairgrounds with a local flyball club called Mutts in Motion who are hosting their first tournament. I am here because they have a compelling story to tell, and because my website, FitDogHome.com is one of the event sponsors.

The action is already at full throttle by 8:30am. Amid the bedlam, teams with names like Mad Dogs, Leap of Faith and Gold Coast Flyers are going neck and neck over the jumps. More than 100 dogs have come to compete and I realize I should have brought earplugs. Flydogs do have the most magnificent vocabulary of woofs and howls and yowls, but then, so do their owners. At the starting lineup, the dogs bark insults at the team across the way, rowdy as all get out, and straining to be off.

I am watching Touch N Go, the team from Las Vegas who are currently the world record holders. Their dogs are sleek and sinewy… staffy-borders someone says, a serendipitous combining of Staffordshire Terriers and Border Collies. They are specially bred for flyball, and they redefine fast. To watch the champions, it must be said, is as exciting as flyball ever gets.

All dogs run for the joy of speed, the stretch, the physical delight of wind in their ears. But these dogs race. There’s a difference. The body sinks low, ears flatten, and the whole dog becomes an aerodynamic muscle, undulating over the jumps at heart stopping pace.

The precision of a really good flyball team is impressive to say the least. The first dog’s return starts the time for dog two. The art in the sport is in knowing when to release the next dog so that the incoming dog has passed the sensor, a nose hair before the outgoing dog bolts through. On Sunday morning Touch N Go come within a fraction of a second of breaking their own record and the place goes wild. They miss it by a whisker.

Breaking records is nice, but winning, as some wise person once said, isn’t all.

The roster of the Mutts in Motion flyball club is as varied and diverse as the Ben & Jerry’s section of your grocer’s freezer. From mystery mutts, to Jack Russells, to cattle dogs and herding dogs, their lineup includes a Dalmatian, a Portuguese Podengo, a Pomeranian and, surprisingly, a couple of Bouviers des Flandres.

If the dogs themselves are a motley crew, their owners are motlier. The youngest handler is Victoria Neufeld, age 16, running Roxy, an Australian Shepherd so pretty she looks like a beauty queen. On the other end of the spectrum are a couple of senior citizens with such an astounding amount of energy one might be forgiven for pronouncing flyball the secret of eternal youth. The oldest dog on the team is Lizzy, an 11 year old Staff Bull Terrier, owned and loved by Loren Fleming. Lizzy and Loren may not be speed demons but they exemplify what Mutts in Motion is all about.

These are predominantly rescue dogs. In previous lives they have been unwelcome and unwanted, abandoned, cut loose, dropped off, left behind.

Nancy Chauncey’s Toby was a drug store giveaway. Lavada Montgomery who is one of the original founders of the club, currently has five four-legged family members including Jack who came from a rescue group, Riddle who was left as a four month old pup when his owners moved, and Chammy, for whom Lavada is the fifth and absolutely, positively last port of call.

The members of Mutts in Motion know first hand the healing power of a sport that can channel one’s natural exuberance. Both dog and handler must become highly trained, responsive, cooperative members of the team. And that doesn’t happen overnight. Everyone commits to the training, everyone shows up and does their best, everyone belongs.

The dogs haven’t just found a home, they have found a life, and that life has purpose.

A singles run brings a little Pomeranian to run against a young Boston Terrier. Both are still learning, easily distracted by barking dogs on the sidelines and red flags which flutter up to indicate a fault. They lose their way. The handlers yell and wave, stand on their heads if it will bring them back on track.

After a comical minute or two the dogs finally complete the run, each crossing the finish line to a hero’s welcome. This is a benign universe where those who go astray get second chances, and everyone gets lavish praise for being just who they are, whoever they are. If that’s not grace I don’t know what is.

In fact, in the flyball universe, the divisions are not determined by the size of the dog but by its speed. Hence Retrievers and Rat Terriers can be team mates and the height of the hurdles will be set for the smallest dog. It’s the universe we all wish we lived in, where what we have in common would so far outweigh our extraordinary differences we could all play on the same team.

When the races are run and the dust has settled, Mutts in Motion’s first tournament is declared a success. At the end of the tournament there is an awards ceremony with plenty of categories to ensure that no team goes home empty handed. A pot luck supper follows, and no one goes home hungry either.

Mutts in Motion is a non-profit group. Look out for their flyball demonstration performances at NBA and NFL half-times, or catch them at rescue fund-raisers and school events.
